Once you have sprayed a test scent, wait 10 minutes before smelling and picking your ideal choice. To help pass time, investigate other brands that you may fancy.  Don’t test the perfume that you want on your friend – each person has their own body odour, which complements the perfume. Through trial and error

You can flit from one perfume counter to the other testing out one fragrance after another but the bottom line is that you need to find out which scent is for you by trial and error. That is why most women have more than just one bottle of perfume on their dressing tables! Most women don’t know whether the scent blends in with their natural body odor until they’ve used it a few times and receives comments about how she smells.

Just imagine a woman walking past you and she’s wearing a frock so old-fashioned that your mother would think it outrageous. You need to wear a scent that compliments and complements your moods and personality.

Nobody can tell you which scent is the best scent for you because the only person who can decide which scent that is is you.

The task of composing perfumes that will sell is to enhance an expert on perfume composition or known in the fragrance industry as the perfumer. A perfumer must have knowledge of a large variety of fragrance ingredients and smell. They must be able to distinguish each of the fragrance ingredients whether alone or in combination with other fragrances. As well, they must know how each ingredient reveals itself through time when mixed with other ingredients.

The composition of a perfume begins when the perfumer’s employer’s are given a brief which will contain the specifications for the desired perfume that the organisation is trying to achieve. Perfume oils usually contain tens to hundreds of ingredients. These ingredients can be roughly grouped into four groups: primary scents, modifiers, blenders and fixatives (refer notes below).

Instead of building a perfume from “ground up”, many modern perfumes and colognes are made using fragrance bases, which are essential oils and aromatic chemicals. The effort used in developing bases by fragrance companies or individual perfumers may equal that of a marketed perfume, since they are useful in that they are reusable.

The perfume’s fragrance oils are then blended with ethyl alcohol and water, aged in tanks for a minimum of 14 days and filtered through processing equipment to remove any sediment and particles before the solution can be filled into the perfume bottles.

Notes:

For instance, jasmine and rose scents are commonly blends for abstract floral fragrances. Cola flavourant is a good example of an abstract primary scent.

Modifiers: These ingredients alter the primary scent to give the perfume a certain desired character: for instance, fruit esters may be included in a floral primary to create a fruity floral; ca lone and citrus scents can be added to create a “fresher” floral. Blenders: A large group of ingredients that smooth out the transitions of a perfume between different “layers” or bases. Common blending ingredients include linalool and hydroxycitronellol.

Fixatives: Used to support the primary scent by bolstering it. Many resins and wood scents, and amber bases are used for fixative purposes.

Perfumes have been around for centuries. People extract the oils from plants and animals the mix this with water and alcohol to create the right scent that people will want to wear.

The most important ingredient in creating your own perfume is the essential oils. The first step in perfume making is the combination of the oils. You should first mix a few drops each of the essential oils. After the essential oils have been mixed, it is the time to pour alcohol into the mixture. The final step in creating your perfume making is to add water. Perfume making is always a lot of fun.

Green Lotus is a perfume by Elizabeth Arden that was launched in 2008 as a limited edition. This lovely fragrance blends the aromas of sweet cherry blossoms, Asian lily, lotus flowers, yuzu, and juicy ripe plums with green tea, white birch and musk. The natural or green perfume family is so named for the homey, natural smells it provides. Musk fragrances are strongly suggestive and sexy. Musk fragrances give off the strongest aroma of all the fragrance families. Chypre or woody perfumes are sometimes also referred to as earthy. This family is made up of fragrances which contain bergamot, jasmine and oakmoss. Scents Fragrances are classified according to the concentration of scent within the fragrance. Those fragrances with a higher concentration of scent (essential oils) have a higher intensity/longevity, which explains the dramatic differences in price between an eau de cologne and Perfume extract. Perfume extract: 20-40% essential oils. Eau de parfum (EDP): 10-30% essential oils. Eau de cologne (EDC): 2-5% essential oils.

Fragrances are often classified as belong to a particular “family”.

Chypre: Fragrances containing undertones of patchouli, bergamot, oakmoss etcetera.

Single Floral: These fragrances are dominated by the scent of one particular flower.

Floral Bouquet: Scents containing combinations of two or more flowers.

Fougère: Scents with an underlying base of lavender, oakmoss and coumarin, providing a “herbaceous” woody fragrance.

Leather: These fragrances have the underlying scents of wood, tobacco and honey, suggestive of real “leather”.

Woody: These fragrances feature the scents of sandalwood, cedar, patchouli.

Citrus: A predominantly citrus-based scent.

Bright Floral: Combination of Single Floral and Floral Bouquet.

Middle (Heart) Notes: The second-stage scent which appears once the head notes fade, and the fragrance blends with the body’s own chemistry (and the reason why perfumes smell different on different people).

Base Notes: The remaining, lingering scent which remains once the perfume has dried, after the middle notes also fade. This is the lasting, staying power of the fragrance.

Last month, Margot Elena’s online emporium of luxury cosmetics and gifts began to stock TokyoMilk Dark Shea Butter Handcremes. Hermès said it had agreed to sell its 45 percent stake in Gaultier to Puig for 16 million euros, or about $24 million, and the Spanish company will also assume 14 million euros in debt. Hermès said last month that it was in talks with several potential buyers for Gaultier.

“I am delighted with this move for a house that is dear to our heart,” Patrick Thomas, the Hermès chief executive, said in a statement. “I am convinced that the alliance between Jean Paul Gaultier and the Puig family will take the house to new highs.”

Mr. Gaultier, who had owned 55 percent of his fashion house, is selling a 15 percent stake to Puig. “It gives me a lot of joy,” he said. “I am not interested in management. I love clothes and I will have the freedom to concentrate on that.”

Marc Puig, chairman and chief executive of Puig, based in Barcelona, said in a statement that his company was “very proud to take over from Hermès and continue the development” of “a brand with such great creativity.”

The Spanish company supports the fashion houses of Nina Ricci, Carolina Herrera and Paco Rabanne and creates fragrances for Comme des Garçons, Prada and the actor Antonio Banderas. The company is growing and eager to raise its profile beyond Europe, where it does more than half of its business.

Hermès is repositioning itself after the unwelcome intrusion into its capital by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the luxury conglomerate run by Bernard Arnault. LVMH now holds more than 20 percent of the equity in Hermès, though the ownership structure of the family-controlled luxury company gives Hermès effective control of its destiny for now.

Mr. Gaultier’s cheeky fragrances, including some in bottles shaped like a woman’s body, have been a long-term financial success, making the brand attractive to Puig despite weaknesses elsewhere in the Gaultier lineup. The haute couture line, founded in 1997, just breaks even, although it has a regular clientele. Mr. Gaultier said high-end fashion would be continued in the new deal.

Mr. Gaultier became known in the 1970s for channeling street style and diverse cultures into French fashion. His impertinent and outrageous creations, which included cross-gender models on the catwalk, have been worn by rock stars like Madonna and Lady Gaga. He has also worked with the Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar.

Puig, founded as a cosmetics company in 1914 by Antonio Puig, booked net profit of 130 million euros last year on revenue of 1.2 billion euros. Its share of the so-called prestige perfume market rose to 7 percent last year from 3.7 percent in 2005, the company said.
